I wrote a novel!

Well, sort of… I have written 50,000 words since November 1, and in so doing, I have begun a new novel. The story isn’t quite finished, but it will be soon! Then the editing process begins. 😛 😉

I even finished a day early by writing 7000 words today to catch up. I missed writing days because of the Make It With Wool/American Heritage Festival trip. (If you write every day for 30 days, you can reach the 50,000 word goal by writing 1,667 words each day)

An Irish Lassie in Delicias, Mexico

The Go Teen Writers prompt contest is back! This time the rules we’re a bit different. Instead of getting the first sentence, we got the last sentence – the ”hook”. It was hard, but I still entered.

It’s hard to go unnoticed in Delicias, Mexico when you look like an Irish lassie. I forget I look different, but occasionally I’m reminded.

I was shopping with Pepito as my escort when a gringo addressed me.

“Ma’am, please come with me.”

I processed the unfamiliar English words slowly. The Spanish chatter surrounding me was more comfortable now than my old language. Pepito put his protective hand on my shoulder and we turned away from the stranger. But he followed and placed his pale hand on my other shoulder. Pepito removed his and balled it into a fist.

The chances of this ending well, I realized, were not good.

One of the judges gave me an honorable mention, which means no points 😦 but I’m maintaining my 2nd place position on the leader board anyway.

This is a clear case of taking inspiration from real life. I look like an Irish lassie myself, but speak Spanish. Sometimes, when I’m surrounded by Spanish, it can be hard to even think in English. And that’s where I got the idea for this prompt!

The neglect of a certain little blog…

I wish I had some good excuses as to why this blog has been neglected, but these reasons will have to do.

I’ve added some things to my Zibbet shop (including the clothing featured in these photos).

I’ve been busy teaching the It’s About Story class every week. (Be sure to click over so you can get a glimpse into my students’ minds!)

The garden is growing and thriving with the (slightly) cooler and more humid weather that we’ve been having. Maybe I’ll post some pictures soon!

Well, that’s all for now 🙂

It’s about story!

This morning,  I taught my first “It’s about story!” class. My students are beginning to join the website, and post their introductions. Please stop by and offer them some encouragement!

Innocent…or guilty?

Time for another entry to the Go Teen Writers prompt contest:

They say I’m innocent, but I know better. If I’m innocent why is my ribcage so tense that I can’t breathe? Why are the tears I try to suppress flowing down my cheeks?

Such a magnificent animal…dead. I should have double-checked the brush I fed him. Then Zuri would still be alive.

My supervisor says I don’t have to resign, but I could never work with animals again. Not at the zoo or anywhere. I can’t even pet my sister’s cat without guilt drowning me.

I don’t know what to do. Animals have been my life ever since I can remember.

This time around I didn’t even make the top 20 😦 Katy McCurdy wrote an amazing entry that received 1st, 2nd and 3rd places! She took first place overall, so I’m in 2nd now.
